I have over 20 years experience in Studio and Location filming including Multi camera work, Studio, OB and PSC. I originally worked for the BBC in Bristol and since 1993 have been freelancing in the film and TV industry.

I have worked and filmed in the UK and abroad with a crew and as a single man op, in both Live as Live and pre-recorded situations. Last year I finished shooting and directing a series of Army drama doc’s for in-house training and filming on the Bonneville salt flats for a new land speed record.

Sound

I have recorded location PSC/ENG sound as a single-man and own most of my own sound equipment including, Gun mics, radio mics and SQN mixer.

However like most Lighting Cameramen, I prefer where possible to work with a sound recordist, either those provided by production or I can recommend several:-

New radio mic frequencies

You might also like to visit this external blog site, which is discussing the shift (and related licensing issues) of radio mic frequencies.

This is a very important issue if you own your own radio mic, and use radio mics on a regular basis.

It has huge financial and production implications to all owners and issues for users, which a large number of production companies, seem to be unaware about.

Editing: – Linear & Non Linear. Currently using Final Cut Pro (FCP)

• First reports are very positive.

The combined unit is sold seperately, although the camera can only be used with the control record unit.

• It comes with a detachable 3metre or 20 metre cable.

• The camera connects to a stand alone CCU/Solid state recorder which can record I/P to 24MB/s using the AVC HD codec

• The control unit will also output HD SDI video which could be fed to your Vision mixer if your in Studio or on an OB.

• Alternatively you can feed the output to another solid state device to record at a higher bit rate ie flash nano, Flash XDR or AKA Ki pro etc.

(This would be on the SDI out)

The important thing to remember about steadicam is that it is just another piece of grip equipment and not always the best replacement for the good old track and dolly.
